Live Scanning Workshop: Paediatric Head

  • Dr Philippa Depree, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Australia
  • Angela Tegg, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Australia
  • The anterior fontanelle provides an excellent window for imaging the neonatal brain with ultrasound. This means that instant bedside imaging can be provided in neonatal units for premature babies and sick neonates, as well as first-line assessment of hydrocephalus, congenital abnormalities, infection, and follow-up of antenatally detected abnormalities. Unlike CT and MRI, ultrasound can be performed without sedation or general anaesthesia, and does not expose neonates to radiation.

Due to the limited field of view provided by the anterior fontanelle approach, head soongraphy can be technically challenging, particularly in the bedside situation in Intensive Care Units.

The workshop will outline approach and techniques for obtaining optimum imaging of the neonatal brain, as well as present some of the more common pathology that is encountered. Live scanning will be used to demonstrate techniques.
