Live Scanning Workshop: Liver Segments
During this workshop we will scan and identify the vascular landmarks of the hepatic and portal veins and the 8 functional segments of the liver (C.Couinaud 1957).
The ability to scan and identify liver segmental anatomy allows for reproducible follow up scans and aids the surgeon, allowing for surgical resection of pathological segments without damage to the remaining normal liver tissue. The hepatic veins course along the periphery of the segments. Surgical resection occurs parallel with the hepatic veins, allowing preservation of portal triads (portal vein, bile duct and hepatic artery) which course into the center of each segment.
Couinauds Segmental Anatomy
Segment 1 = Caudate lobe (IVC, MPV, Ligamentum venosum)
Segment 2 = superior and lateral left lobe
Segment 3 = inferior and lateral left lobe
Segment 4 is sometimes divided into 4a and 4b
Segment 4a = superior and medial left lobe
Segment 4b = inferior and medial left lobe
Segment 5 = inferior and anterior right lobe
Segment 6 = inferior and posterior right lobe
Segment 7 = superior and posterior right lobe
Segment 8 = superior and anterior right lobe
