State of the WFUMB Centers of Excellence

  • Prof Byung Ihn Choi, Seoul National University Hospital, Korea
  • Aims: Education in medical ultrasound in developing countries with accreditation
    Storing of technical information, Communication with other centers and with WHO and WFUMB.
    Establishment: Agreement between WFUMB and a society affiliated to WFUMB.
    Term: Initial contract for 3 years and Renewal once for 2 years.
    Budget: Independent from WFUMB (WFUMB supports $ 2,000 a year + $ 3,000 for lecturers).
    Location: Asia, Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe.
    Secretariat: WFUMB appointed Affiliated Society.
    Secretary: appointed by local Society.
    Responsibility of Centers: Training programs, Reporting every year to WFUMB, Financial administration.
    Responsibility of WFUMB: Approval of the name, Recommendation of curriculum, Recognition of budget, Recommendation of teachers, Examination and accreditation of the trainers, Moderation of World Centers.
    Essential criteria of the society to be appointed: Developing country, Solid society, Independent office, Experience on education in the past, Ability to call trainers from own and surrounding countries.
    Frequency of training programs: once a year.
    Application: By candidate's society to WFUMB Advisory Board. An agreement to be established.

    1) Dhaka, Bangladesh: Established on February 24, 2004, by the Bangladesh society of Ultrasonography (BSU). Dr. Kanu Bala: Secretary
    2) Kampala, Uganda: Established on June 8, 2004, by the Uganda Association of Sonography (UGASON). Dr. Michael Kawooya: Secretary
    3) Caracas, Venezuela: Established on February 6, 2005, by Sicuedad Venezolana de Ultrasonido en Medicina (AVUM). Dr. Leandro Fernandez: Secretary
    4) Timisoara, Romania: Established on June 1, 2007 by Romanian society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (RSUMB) Dr. Ioan Sporea: Secretary
