  • Bangladesh, is the 8th biggest country in the world. Present population of Bangladesh 150 million, which is 2% of the world population. Doctor people ratio is 1: 5,000, but this ratio is not maintained throughout the whole country. The health delivery problems and its solutions are different from that in developed countries.

In 1980 ultrasonography was first introduced in Bangladesh as diagnostic purpose. Since then the technique is being used increasingly. At present more than 5000 units are in use throughout the country. The educational aspects have become very important.

The use of diagnostic ultrasound by individuals without proper training and experiences adds to it the likelihood of unnecessary examinations & misdiagnosis. The need for adequate education and training in ultrasonography exists both in developed countries and in developing countries. In developed countries the greater need is for training to maintain and increase levels of competency, whereas in developing countries both entry-level training and continuing education are primary needs. The Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography has formulated a two step education program.

Step-1 education: This program is for the doctors who are not exposed to or little exposed to ultrasonography willing to come in this field. It is a 12 weeks long compact education program comprising of lectures, supervised practical, video-sessions and slide-sessions. This program is meeting the needs for trained the doctors who will deliver basic services to the people with a minimum set up and financial involvement.

Step-2 education: This is a 12 months long advanced diploma course run under a university. Doctors with at least 2 years experience in ultrasonography come for advanced education in ultrasonography. Very soon 2 years long master course in ultrasonography will be started.

World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology [WFUMB] has established its first 'Center of Excellence' in Bangladesh. BSU in collaboration with WFUMB organizes workshops every year. Doctors from Bangladesh and from adjacent countries are benefited.

In conclusion, the Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography thinks that a minimum basic service of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasonography should be available to the common people irrespective of their purchasing ability.
