Ultrasonography in Patients with Scrotal Pain

  • Jongchul Kim, Chungnam National University Hospital, Korea
  • Objective: To demonstrate various informative findings of ultrasonography (US) in patients with scrotal pain.
Methods: Among the patients with scrotal pain who received US in our and affiliated hospitals, the pathologically proven or clinically confirmed scrotal diseases were included in our study. A retrospective analysis of the US images in transverse, longitudinal, or oblique US scans was done in terms of lesion detection, lesion localization, lesion characterization, echogenecity, posterior acoustic enhancement or shadowing, vascularity pattern on color Doppler or power Doppler US, etc. Considering all these US findings, the informative US findings of specific diseases were selected and summarized.
Results: Among various US findings of testicular torsion, appendiceal torsion, spermatic cord torsion, scrotal injury, testicular infarction, epididymitis, orchitis, epididymoorchitis, testicular abscess, epididymal abscess, hydrocele, pyocele, hematocele, varicocele, idiopathic scrotal edema, etc., some are useful to diagnose specific diseases causing scrotal pain (especially in case of acute scrotum).
Conclusions: Familiarity with the spectrum of the informative US findings in patients with scrotal pain will allow the radiologists and clinicians to diagnose & treat adequately and salvage the important male sex organ in time.
