A Review of the Sonographic Features and Differential Diagnosis of Krukenberg Tumor: A Case Report
This case report presents a 39 year old G4P4 (4004) woman with bilateral ovarian new growths probably malignant, massive ascites and pleural effusion. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy, peritoneal fluid cytology, bilateral salpingooophorectomy. Intraoperatively, the impression of bilateral ovarian fibroma was considered due to its gross appearance but histopathology report showed Krukenberg tumor. While clinical history and pelvic examination are useful in diagnosing adnexal masses, distinguishing between benign and malignant features can be difficult. Transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound of Krukenberg ovarian tumors can present similar morphological characteristics with other ovarian masses. The use of modalities like Color Doppler and tumor markers may improve the accuracy of diagnosis. A review of the sonographic features of Krukenberg tumors and its clinical correlation is presented.
