Assessment of the Sonohistological Diagnosis for Benign Ovarian Cysts Treated by Laparoscopy
Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of transvaginal ultrasound (TVU) in the differentiation between the many different benign ovarian cysts.
Method: Between 2006 and 2008, all women who had TVU diagnosis and laparoscopic surgery done by author because of a benign ovarian cyst were included in this study.
Results: A total of 84 women were included consecutively. All ovarian cysts were enucleated..Histologic diagnosis was endometrioma in 46.4% of the excised cysts, dermoid cyst in 16.7%, simple cyst in 10.7%, mucinous cyst in 8.3%, luteal cyst in 7.4%, serous cyst in 4.8%, paratubal cyst in 4.8%, and inclusion cyst 1.2%. The overall diagnostic accuracy of the sonohistological diagnosis was 57%. The diagnostic accuracy of the sonohistological diagnosis for simple cyst is 77.8%, for dermoid is 71.4%, for endometrioma is 64.1%.
Conclusion: TVU in distinguishing between the different histopathological diagnosis of benign ovarian cysts is better for simple, dermoid and endometriotic cysts.
