Methodology: A public hospital based survey of emergency and out-patients clients using a one-to-one interview using structured questionnaires before and after a scanning procedure was conducted. Responses were grouped systematically and analyzed using frequency distribution and Fisher extract test.
Results: One hunded twenty women participated, 47 obstetric and 73 gynecologic cases.Around 38% are first time patients. Majority (80%)believed that ultrasound will assist them in their diagnosis and 67% were assisted by their health provider with ultrasound information.Anxiety was evidentin 24% of patients because of nature of test, cost of ultrasound, and examiner.More ultrasound information with health staff and mass media awareness was recommended.
Conclusion: While ultrasound is an indispensable diagnostic test in obstetrics and gynecology, need for public awareness and educationis needed. Health providers may provide some explanations and information materials prior to scanning to deliver a client-centered approach.
